Skateboards

Project Summary
This was part of my senior thesis in college, where I explored the correlation between the subculture of skateboarding and how that culture is not as taboo as it seems when you compare it to organized religion.

In addition to creating cohesive art pieces for this project we were also tasked with displaying these in a gallery setting. This played a part in my decision to do something out of the ordinary because many people just had posters hanging on the wall.

Process: First I designed stencils in Adobe Illustrator. Next I printed these out to scale and determined how many stencils I would need and fixed them to the boards after cutting out the negative space. I then used a pencil to mark the areas on the board. Finally I removed the stencils and started wood burning. The smaller areas were too small to cut out stencils and for those sections I freehanded the details.

Project Summary
This sculpture class project was for the 125th anniversary of Grant Wood's birth. Wood is a well known artist who was born in Cedar Rapids, IA (where I was attending school at the time). For our sculpture we (Mason Evans and I) decided to do a layered wood burning portrait. Completed projects were then displayed in the NewBo district of Cedar rapids and then we agreed to have it auctioned off and the proceeds going to the museum.
